Editor’s Report, 2016

International Studies in the Philosophy of Science (ISPS) reports the following manuscript handling figures for 2016. We received 35 unsolicited article manuscripts. The editor rejected three of these without seeking further advice, on the grounds that they fell outside the journal’s scope or failed to meet minimum scholarly standards. The editor sent the other 32 manuscripts to referees. We rejected 13 manuscripts in the light of the referees’ comments, and we invited authors to send us a revised manuscript in the other 19 cases. We received 17 revised manuscripts, and accepted all for publication.

Our referees play two main roles: to advise the editor on which manuscripts to accept for publication, and to offer criticism and suggestions to help authors improve their manuscripts. In the latter role, referees noticeably raise the quality of almost every article we publish; they also provide a service to the community by giving feedback on manuscripts that we are unable to accept. Members of our editorial board undertake some refereeing: their names are listed on the inside front cover of each issue, in the title pages of each volume of the journal, and on the journal website. External referees, however, carry out most of the work. The external referees who helped us in 2016 are listed below. We thank all our referees for their service to the profession.

We are additionally grateful to editorial board members for representing the journal in the academic community and for scouting for promising manuscripts. The editor reviewed the state of the journal at the Inter-University Centre, Dubrovnik, in April 2016 with editorial board members participating in the Annual Philosophy of Science Conference, the forum in which ISPS was founded in 1986.

It is a pleasure to thank the team at Taylor & Francis Ltd. who worked on ISPS in 2016, and especially George Cooper, Managing Editor; Louise Evans, Production Editor; Stephen Kirton and William Padgett, Production Team Leaders; and Emma Lockwood, Editorial Assistant.

We once again look forward to publishing the best of the work in philosophy of science offered to us in the coming year.
