Abstract
The subject, a 14‐year‐old girl, had been diagnosed as a poor reader, and possibly a developmental dyslexic, through screening tests. She was administered several other reading related tasks to determine the nature of her reading disability. Her performance in these tasks indicates that her lack of proficiency in reading may be attributed to carelessness and wrong anticipation of words. When she was put in a condition which conveyed to her the necessity of reading carefully, she did so and made no mistakes. Her case may not be an isolated one, and other children who are diagnosed as being developmental dyslexics may also simply be careless readers. Possible reasons for this subjects's carelessness and erroneous anticipation of words when reading, and the question of whether she should be regarded as a dyslexic, are discussed.
