Abstract
Objectives
This research intends to address the relationship between sleep disturbances and physical impairment using systematic review and meta-analysis methods.
Method
The study design was a systematic review and meta-analysis. The search was limited to the articles published in English and available online until July 2019. The odds ratio and the lower and upper confidence intervals were converted into logarithms, and then the standard error was calculated.
Result
The total number of participants in the meta-analysis was 581,945. Sleep disturbances are associated with physical impairment, and this odds ratio (OR) is equal to 1.33 and the confidence interval (CI) is 1.19–1.48 (P < 0.001). In prospective cohort studies, the results are equal to OR = 1.40 and CI = 1.24–1.58 (P < 0.001), and in cross-sectional OR was 1.26 and 1.08–1.47 (P = 0.004).
Discussion
Sleep disturbances are associated with physical impairment. Therefore, improving sleep is associated with better Mobility, ADL, and IADL.
