Changes in Gill Raker Morphology for Three Age Classes of Kokanee

ABSTRACT

We used gill raker measurements of kokanee salmon and zooplankton body dimensions to assess how gill raker structure and prey retention probabilities change with fish age. Cumulative proportion of filtering area between gill rakers and retention probabilities for smaller zooplankton decreased with increasing age of kokanee. Assuming strict filter feeding, only the largest of zooplankters would be retained by age-3 kokanee.
