Polychlorinated dibenzothiophenes (PCDTs) are sulfur‐containing analogues of polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs). The total number of possible PCDT congeners is 135, from monoto the octachlorinated compounds. The origin of PCDTs in environment is not exactly known. PCDTs have been found in pulp and paper mill effluents, in stack gas and fly ash from waste combustion and from metal reclamation, in sediments near industrial facilities and in benthic aquatic organisms. PCDTs are formed also in the incineration of PCBs. Probably, PCDTs are formed by chemical processes similar to those of the formation of PCDFs.
