The goal of the study was to develop a brief questionnaire of out‐of‐school activities to assess creative ability in mathematics at four levels using a three‐stage circular technique. First, a mapping sentence was developed that defined the conceptual components of creative ability in mathematics at four hierarchical levels. Based upon the mapping sentence, a preliminary set of 61 items was prepared which was administered to four groups of judges (N=104) who ranked each item for creative talent level in mathematics, and to 139 Israeli 11th and 12th grade students who reported whether or not they had performed the activities. The resulting data provided evidence of the construct validity of a 12‐item scale for assessing creative mathematical talent at four levels. In addition, the findings indicated specific modifications that were needed in the continuing development of the mapping sentence.
