Outstanding Publication Award

Abstract

Copyright © 2020 American Association for Aerosol Research

The 2019 Aerosol Science and Technology (AS&T) Outstanding Publication Award recognizes Christopher M. Sorensen for his 2001 review titled “Light Scattering by Fractal Aggregates: A Review” (Aerosol Science and Technology 35: 648–687). Sorensen’s review was among the first to critique and consolidate the vast literature concerning light scattering and absorption by fractal aggregates that developed after the “fractal revolution” of the mid-1980s. The subject is presented with both mathematically rigorous and physically intuitive approaches. There is also significant description of aggregate morphology. Methods and examples for in situ optical particle sizing and morphology analysis are described. Despite being published 17 years ago, it continues to be highly cited to this day; it is a paper for the ages.

As&T Outstanding Publication Award Criteria

AS&T's Outstanding Publication Award is awarded annually to one article published in AS&T without regard to publication date. The award recognizes articles that have had a significant impact on the field. Nominations should include a single letter and a citation of approximately 100 words. The letter is limited to three pages and may be signed by more than one person. The citation is a succinct summary of the significance of the article, suitable for dissemination with the award announcement. Self-nominations are not permitted.

AS&T's Editor-in-Chief presents the AS&T Outstanding Publication Award at the annual American Association for Aerosol Research (AAAR) meeting. It consists of a certificate for each coauthor, one plaque to be used at the discretion of the coauthors, and a monetary award of $2000.
