Theoretical derivation of particle collision kernels and its enhancement at a high concentration from a first-time-passage approach in the diffusive regime

Abstract

A theoretical explanation for obtaining collision kernels from the first-time passage approach proposed by [Gopalakrishnan, R., & Hogan Jr., C. J. (2011). Aerosol Science and Technology, 45(12), 1499–1509] is developed in this work. This new approach leads to an interesting correction for particle coagulation at high concentrations and enlights the limitations of classical derivations by [Fuchs, N. A. (1964). Dover Publications] and [Friedlander, S. K. (2000). (Vol. 198). New York: Oxford University Press] where the transient part of the diffusive collision kernel is typically neglected.
