Exercise times enhance child skill building

ABSTRACT

Exercise times can enhance a variety of child learning goals and especially help some children with attention span difficulties to concentrate better on class lessons. Specific ways for teachers to create exercise sessions are suggested and how teachers can use exercise times to promote new word learning, creative imagination, as well as pride in body mastery.

Alice Sterling Honig, Professor Emerita at Syracuse University, received her BA degree (Magna cum Laude) from Barnard College, MA, from Columbia University, and Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from Syracuse University. She taught many Child Development courses from 1975 for the SU College for Human Development. As Professor, she created courses in Language and Cognition, Cross-Cultural study, Prosocial and Moral Development, and Observation and Assessment and was awarded the Chancellors' Citation for Academic Excellence. A Fellow of the APA and of SRCD, she is also a licensed NY State therapist in private practice. For six years, she served as Research Review Editor for NAEYC's ‘Young Children’. For over 35 years, she taught a National one- week Quality Infant/toddler Caregiving course each summer. She has published over 650 articles/chapters. Among her more than two dozen books are: Infant caregiving: A design for training (with J.R. Lally); Parent involvement in early childhood education; Risk factors in infancy (Ed); Playtime learning games for young children; The best for babies: Expert advice for assessing infant/toddler programs; Little kids, big worries: Stress-busting tips for early childhood classrooms; Experiencing nature with young children: Awakening delight, curiosity, and a sense of stewardship; and Literacy, storytelling and bilingualism in Asian Classrooms (Ed.). She has lectured widely, and done extensive caregiver training in the USA as well as in Europe and Asia. In China she was honored to present the first Dr. Alice S. Honig Award to a Chinese pediatrician. She received the Central New York Psychological Association award for “Outstanding lifetime contribution and service.”
