Age- and sex-related differences in diet selection by Rattus rattus on Stewart Island, New Zealand

Pages 463-466 | Received 29 Apr 1982, Published online: 16 Jan 2012

Abstract

The diet of ship rats in a forested area of Stewart Island, New Zealand, was studied by analysis of the stomach contents of 100 specimens. It was composed mainly of seeds, fruits, and arthropods. Age- and sex-dependent foraging strategies were indicated by these analyses. Juveniles and mature females included significantly more animal food in their diet than did mature males. The implications of these differences with regard to intraspecific competition are discussed.
