Magnesium in New Zealand soils

I. Some factors governing the availability of soil magnesium: A review

Pages 277-319 | Received 20 Mar 1974, Published online: 24 Jan 2012

Abstract

A review of certain aspects of soil magnesium is presented. It is introduced by a short historical outline of research findings on magnesium deficiencies in soils and plants followed by a brief summary of previous review articles.

Exchangeable and non-exchangeable forms of soil magnesium and methods for their determination are then described, and an account is given of magnesium additions to, and losses from, the soil. Soil factors affecting plant uptake of magnesium are outlined, and the grass tetany problem is briefly discussed.

Finally, the various materials used directly or indirectly as magnesium sources for soil or foliar application are listed, and their characteristics briefly described.
