Abstract

In Hawke’s Bay, 24% of pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) plants were infected by viruses in 1981 and 1982, and 38% in 1983. In Poverty Bay, 16% of plants were infected in 1981. Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) was the predominant virus in Hawke’s Bay with average incidences of 13.0%, 17.0%, 28.7% in 1981, 1982, and 1983 respectively. Alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV) incidence was 7.6%, 5.8%, and 6.9% and that of tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) was 3.9%, 1.6%, and 2.2% during the same period. In Poverty Bay, AMV (9.3%) was more prevalent than CMV (5.5%) and TSWV (1.3%). Comparison of weight of fruit harvested from symptomless and infected plants suggested that yield loss for the three years was 8.4% for CMV, 3.8% for AMV, and 2.0% for TSWV — a total crop loss of 14.2% per year.
