AN INPUT-OUTPUT ANALYSIS OF AGRIBUSINESS IN SOUTH AFRICA / 'n Inset-uitset onderling van landboubesighede in Suid-Afrika.

Abstract

Agriculture in South Africa plays a minor role in terms of contribution to gross domestic product. Amongst others for this reason, agriculture is only reflected as a single production activity in the South African input-output tables. This may understate the possibility that a large number of production activities depend on agriculture. For this purpose the term agribusiness is introduced. A special input-output table is presented with particular emphasis on agribusiness in South Africa. This input-output table is used to highlight the relative importance of agribusiness by means of simple linkage analysis. The results show that agribusiness is relatively more important in terms of backward linkages and employment multipliers. Finally, these results are discussed in the context of a possible agriculture-demand-led industrialisation strategy. The relevance of such a strategy for South Africa remains to be seen, although certain elements are supported by the results of the simple linkage analysis.

Landbou speel 'n geringe rol in terme van die bydrae tot die bruto binnelandse produk van Suid-Afrika. As gevolg hiervan word landbou, onder meer, as slegs een produksie-aktiwiteit in die nasionale inset-uitsettabel beskou. Dit kan egter die moontlikheid verdoesel dat 'n groot aantal produksie-aktiwiteite van die landbou afhanklik is. As gevolg hiervan word die insluiting van agro-nywerhede vir insluiting in die inset-uitsettabel voorgestel. 'n Spesifieke inset-uitsettabel word voorgehou waarin agro-nywerheid in Suid-Afrika sterk beklemtoon word. Hierdie inset-uitsettabel word gebruik om die relatiewe belangrikheid aan te dui deur eenvoudige skakeleffekte. Die resultate toon dat die agro-nywerheid relatief belangriker is as ander aktiwiteite in terme van terugwaartse skakelings en indiensnemingsvermenigvuldigers. Ten slotte word hierdie resultate binne 'n raamwerk van moontlike landbouvraaggeleide industrialisasie strategie bespreek. Die belangrikheid van so 'n strategie vir Suid-Afrika kan bevraagteken word, maar bepaalde aspekte word deur die resultate van die eenvoudige skakelingsontleding gesteun.
