1. The papers, which are integrated into this article (a version of which has, in turn, been includedas chapter 4 in Saul, 2006), were originally presented, as background documents, at the Workshop on ‘Africa: The Second Liberation Struggle,’ ably organised by Richard Saunders, Carolyn Bassett and Gigi Herbert and held at York University on October 15-18, 2004.
