Journal of Moral Education 40th Anniversary Conference, Association for Moral Education 37th Annual Conference and the Asia‐Pacific Network for Moral Education 6th Annual Conference

At the 2009 AME conference in Utrecht the JME Editorial Board and the AME Board voted, virtually unanimously, to accept the APNME proposal for a joint 2011 conference. This conference will mark the JME's 40th anniversary year of publication. It will also be the first time that the AME conference will be held outside North America or Europe. It is hoped that this joint decision presages a closer relationship between JME and AME. We hope that this conference will be a landmark event, recognising the JME's international coverage, its sponsorship of regional networks, and specifically the core value placed on moral education by many of the Asia Pacific nations, the growing participation of scholars from this region in AME, and institutional and personal subscribers to JME. It is intended that this conference will promote dialogue between scholars from East and West, North and South, to hear common and distinctive voices and perspectives on moral education and development in the context of shifting world polarities as we move into the second decade of the twenty‐first century.

The conference will take place from 24 to 28 October 2011 in Nanjing, China. The conference theme is Cultivating Morality: Human Beings, Nature and the World. The conference is being hosted by Professor Jin Shenghong, Chair of APNME and Director of the Research Institute for Moral Education, Nanjing Normal University, with the support of other moral education centres and scholars in China and the APNME conference committee, as well as colleagues in AME and JME. The conference will be held in the very comfortable 4/5* Nanjing International Conference Centre, located in a forested mountain area within walking distance of many historic sites, and easily accessible to Nanjing city and its cultural heritage dating back almost 2500 years. We intend to offer a full academic programme and complementary cultural and travel activities.

Initially, your attention is drawn to two related announcements, below. Further information will be forthcoming during 2010.

Scholarships

The Association for Moral Education and the Journal of Moral Education will jointly offer scholarships to support eligible scholars attending the joint conference in Nanjing, China, in 2011, which will be marking the 40th Anniversary of the Journal. These scholarships are intended for scholars who would otherwise have difficulty in funding their attendance. These may include doctoral and post‐doctoral researchers and scholars from regions of the world that are generally under‐represented at AME conferences. Further details will be published later in 2010, with a view to applications being made by the end of 2010.

The JME–Taylor Prize

To mark the 40th anniversary of the JME in 2011 an annual prize is being established to encourage the ongoing submission and publication of quality papers. It is specifically intended to recognise: a first‐time publication by a junior scholar; an author from a developing country; an author whose first language is not English; or an innovative contribution from an established scholar which changes thinking on moral education. The prize is being jointly funded by the Trustees of the JME Ltd and a personal gift from Dr. Monica J. Taylor, on retirement after 35 years as Editor of JME. The first award will be made at the 2011 conference. Further information will be made available in 2010.
