ABSTRACT
In the present study, 2-(2-Amino-3-((4-bromophenyl) diazenyl)pyrazolo [1,5-a]pyrimidin-7-yl) cyclohexanone (PPC) as an organic ligand was evaluated in the liquid-liquid (water-chloroform) extraction to extract Th (IV) from thorium sulphate solution. The characterisation of the ligand was carried out using elemental analysis, fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), mass spectrum (MS) and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR13C). The extraction experiments were carried out to determine the optimum conditions of thorium extraction; these controlling conditions include pH, contact time, organic concentration, initial thorium concentration, and aqueous/organic phase ratio. Thorium stripping from the loaded organic solvent was investigated. The effect of different parameters on the stripping process has been evaluated. The applicability of the prepared (PPC) organic ligand for thorium extraction from a real sample that was obtained from monazite sand was also investigated. Finally, thorium was precipitated using ammonia solution in the form of thorium oxide.
