An up-to-date review about (bio)sensor systems developed for detection of glyphosate

Pages 5974-5986 | Received 29 May 2021, Accepted 28 Jun 2021, Published online: 31 Aug 2021

ABSTRACT

Glyphosate (GLY) is a broad-spectrum and non-specific herbicide and it is commonly used worldwide. Since the adverse effects of GLY have been shared, GLY related news are highly attractive for magazines and public. Therefore, there is an increasing number of reports for the development of new detection platforms or methodologies for GLY. In this report, studies for development of GLY-specific (bio)sensors were presented. The total publications per year with the sum of times cited per year and research areas of the reported studies were obtained from Web of Science Core Collection and represented to give a perspective for the scientists in this area. The (bio)sensors developed by different analytical techniques were compared in terms of their advantages and disadvantages. Challenges and progresses for development of hand-held analyser for on-line monitoring of GLY in different samples such as water, soil, foodstuffs or biological fluids were comprehensively discussed. This is the first study in the literature for the purpose of the evaluation of the (bio)sensor designs developed for (bio)monitoring of GLY in combination with different analytical techniques.
