ABSTRACT

Mn2O3 was synthesised by solid state decomposition of Mn(II)-ascorbate precursor. The precursor was characterised by elemental analyses, TGA, FT-IR and electronic spectra. The as-prepared precursor was decomposed at 700°C in air forming cubic Mn2O3 with average size 55 nm. It was characterised by XRD, TEM, SAED and FESEM. The electron microscope images indicated the formation of meso- and macrospores Mn2O3. Adsorption of Ponceau Xylidine dye onto Mn2O3 nanoparticles at different conditions, as amount of Mn2O3, time of contact and pH, was studied. It was found that, Mn2O3 NPs could remove 98.3% of Ponceau Xylidine from aqueous media. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics of the adsorption process were studied. Both surface adsorption (chemisorptions) and intra-particle diffusion mechanisms simultaneously cooperated in the adsorption of Ponceau Xylidine on Mn2O3 nanoparticles. The antimicrobial activity of Mn2O3 NPs on Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans was investigated. Mn2O3 nanoparticles showed good activity against the tested organisms.
