Abstract
Sir Wilfred Thesiger died on 24 August 2003, aged 93. In 1954, the Society awarded him the Lawrence of Arabia Memorial Medal “for work and travel among the Arabs”. He was an Honorary Vice‐President of the Society from 14 June 1990. On that date, he delivered the Anniversary Lecture to the Society. Entitled ‘Retrospect’, it was published in Asian Affairs, Vol. XXI, Part III.
Notes
Shaikh Zayed definitely used this name, though Wilfred himself said that he was known – at least earlier – as ‘Mubarak bin Miriam’, which would have been in line with the usage of his companions bin Kabina and bin Ghabaisha and their tribe, the Bait Kathir, although the normal practice in Arabia is to name a son after his father rather than his mother. Bin Ghabaisha is also transliterated as bin Ghubaisha. We have followed Thesiger's own spelling in Arabian Sands. (Please also see below the reference to Thesiger's companions in the tribute by Mr John Shipman.)
Described in Thesiger's book The Marsh Arabs, 1964.
