EFFECTS OF POLLARDING AND WATHER ON THE INCREMENTAL TRUNK GROWTH OF COMMON LIME (TILIA X EUROPAEA) IN AN URBAN CONTEXT

Summary

Core were taken from the trunks of thirty-five pollarded and thirty-five unpollarded lime trees (Tilia x europaea) in Kidderminster, Worcestershire, and annual growth rings were measured. The act of pollarding led to an initial growth spurt then, for a few years, a relative decline in trunk growth rate. Data suggest that weather, especially temperature and rainfall regimes of the preceding seasons, together with a range of site effects, including inter-tree spacing and soil, had a greater impact on annual trunk growth than pollarding. It was difficult to ascertain any convincing environmental relationships with non pollarded trees.

Résumé

Des échantillons cylindriques ont été prélevés sur les troncs de trente-cinq tilleuls (Tilia × europaea) écimés et de trente-cinq tilleuls non écimés, poussant à Kidderminster (Worcestershire), et leurs anneaux de croissance annuelle ont été mesurés. L'écimage provoquait une poussée de croissance initiale, suivie pendant quelques années par un déclin relatif du taux de croissance du tronc. Les données suggèrent que plus que l'écimage le temps—particulièrement les régimes de températures et précipitations des saisons précédentes—ainsi qu'une variété d'effets liés au site, tels que l'espacement des arbres et les caractéristiques du sol, avaient des incidences plus importantes sur la croissance annuelle du tronc. Il était difficile d'établir des rapports environnementaux convaincants avec les arbres non écimés.
