Normal and clinical haematology of greater and lesser flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus and Phoeniconaias minor)

Summary

Normal haematological reference values were obtained for Greater and Lesser flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus, Phoeniconaias minor). Statistically significant differences in the total white cell count and the absolute heterophil count were found in the two species. The reference values were used to identify abnormalities in the blood of five sick birds. Three of these were anaemic, all showed red cell hypochromia and four had heterophilia. The findings suggested that haematological testing is of potential diagnostic value in the species.

Des valeurs de référence hématologiques ont été établies pour le grand et le petit flamant (Phoenicopterus roseus, Phoeniconaias minor). Des différences significatives ont été trouvées entre les deux espèces en ce qui concerne le nombre total de globules blancs et d'hétérophiles. Les valeurs de références ont été utilisées pour étudier les anomalies du sang de cinq oiseaux malades. Trois d'entre eux étaient anémiques, tous montraient une hypochromie des globules rouges et quatre présentaient une hétérophilie. Ces résultats suggèrent que les contrôles hématologiques ont une valeur diagnostique dans cette espèce.

Normale haematologische Referenzwerte wurden für den Flamingo und den Zwergflamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus, Phoeniconaias minor) ermittelt. Bei beiden Spezies bestehen statistisch signifikante Unterschiede der totalen Anzahl weißer Blutzellen und der absoluten Heterophilenzahl. An Hand der Referenzwerte wurden pathologische Blutwerte bei fünf kranken Vögeln diagnostiziert. Drei davon waren anaemisch und zeigten Hypochromasie der Roten Zellen und vier wiesen eine Heterophilie auf. Die Befunde sprechen für einen möglichen diagnostischen Wert der Blutuntersuchung bei diesen Vogelarten.

Se obtuvieron valores hematológicos normales de referencia de los Flamencos Mayor y Menor (Phoenicopterus roseus, Phoeniconaias minor). Diferencias estadísticamente significativas en el conteo total de los glóbulos blancos y en el conteo absoluto de heterófilos fueron hallados en las dos especies. Los valores de referencia fueron usados para identificar anormalidades en la sangre de cinco aves enfermas, tres de las cuales estaban anémicas, todas mostraron hipocromia eritrocítica y cuatro tenían heterofilia.

Estos hallazgos sugieren que las pruebas hemáticas poseen un valor potencial de diagnóstico en estas especies.
