Carcinoma with concurrent haemosiderosis in an Australian bittern (Botaurus poidloptilus)

Summary

A 15‐year‐old female bittern was presented for necropsy with a history of weight loss and ascites. There was a large neoplastic mass in the abdominal cavity closely attached to the gizzard with several smaller masses attached to the intestine and involving the liver. Much of the normal liver tissue had been obliterated. Histologi‐cally, there were many mitotic figures and in some sections the tumour had an acinar pattern. The overall morphology of the tumour was consistent with a carcinoma. The ovary was normal. There was concurrent hepatic haemosiderosis which was severe. As an incidental finding there were several small and two large cysts in the left and right kidneys.

Une femelle butor, âgée de 15 ans, a été présentée à l'autopsie avec, comme commémoratif, une perte de poids et une ascite. Dans la cavité abdominale a été trouvée une large masse néoplasique étroitement liée au gésier avec plusieurs masses plus petites attachées à l'intestin et concernant le foie. La plupart du tissu hépatique normal était envahi. Histologiquement, one été observées de nombreuses figures de mytoses et dans quelques sections la tumeur présentait un caractère acinaire. La morphologie globale de la tumeur était consistante avec un carcinome. L'ovaire était normal. Il y avait une hémosidérose hépatique concomitant très sévère. Enfin, ont été observés deux gros et plusieurs petits kystes dans les reins droit et gauche.

Zusammenfassung

Ein 15 Jahre altes Rohrdommel‐Weibchen wurde mit dem Vorbericht von Gewichtsverlust und Aszites zur Sektion gebracht. In der Bauchhöhle war eine große Geschwulstmasse am Muskelmagen; mehrere kleinere Tumore befanden sich am Darm und in der Leber. Ein großer Teil des Lebergewebes war obliteriert. Histologisch fanden sich viele Kernteilungsfiguren, und in einigen Schnitten hatte der Tumor eine azinöse Zeichnung. Der Eierstock war normal. Es gab zugleich eine Leberhämosiderose, die stark ausgeprägt war. Als Zufallsbefund wurden mehrere kleine und zwei große Zysten in der linken und rechten Niere festgestellt.

Se necropsió un avetoro hembra de 15 años de edad con una historia de pérdida de peso y ascitis. Se detectó una masa neoplásica grande en la cavidad abdominal intimamente asociada al ventrículo subcenturiado con varias masas más pequeñas unidas al intestino y afectando al hígado. Gran parte del parénquima hepático normal había desaparecido. Histológicamente, se observaron numerosas mitosis y en algunas áreas este tumor tenía un aspecto acinar. La morfología general de esta neoplasia fue consistente con la de un carcinoma. El ovario rio estaba alterado. Existía una hemosiderosis hepática que era severa. Un hallazgo incidental fue las presencia de varios quistes pequeños y dos grandes en los ríñones izquierdo y derecho.
