This special issue of Linear and Multilinear Algebra is devoted to the 12th Workshop on Numerical Ranges and Numerical Radii held at the Tsinghua Sanya International Mathematics Forum at Sanya from July 28 to August 1, 2014.

The Tsinghua Sanya International Mathematics Forum (TSIMF) was established to host research conferences, workshops and retreats. It is located at the beautiful resort city of Sanya of Hainan Province in Southern China. It serves as an international hub for mathematicians and mathematical scientists to dissimulate latest results and to develop new ideas.

The study of numerical ranges and numerical radii has a long history. It is related to many pure and applied topics, and has found applications in the quantum information science lately. The workshop series on the topic provides a good opportunity for researchers on the topic to exchange ideas and experiences.

The organizing committee of this workshop consists of:

* Shiu-Yuen Cheng, Tsinghua University.

* Man-Duen Choi, University of Toronto.

* Jinchuan Hou, Taiyuan University of Technology.

* Chi-Kwong Li, College of William and Mary.

* Jie Xiao, Tsinghua University.

There were 45 participants from different regions inculding China, Canada, Iran, Hong Kong, Phillipines, USA, Taiwan, etc. There were 32 talks arranged in the five day workshop. A workshop dinner took place on July 20.
