Values should be L/D=8 rather than L/D=2 in the captions for Figures 3 and 4 and “L/D=8” should be added to the caption for Figure 5. Furthermore, the corresponding changes must be made in the table for rows starting with 3a, 3e; 3b, 3f; 3c, 3g; 3d, 3h; and 4.
Corrected Captions:
Figure 3. Value of streamfunction for convection at Ra = 105, L/D = 8. This is not a time sequence like figure 2. Each point represents the maximum or minimum for a long run over numerous cycles. The regions with time-dependent flow are shaded. Results are for Boussinesq equations on the left and for seawater polynomial coefficients on the right with (a,e) Pr = 1 (b, f) Pr = 2 (c, g) Pr = 3, (d, h) Pr = 4.
Figure 4. A run showing oscillations in streamfunction strength at different values of Pr at Ra = 105, Raf = 3×105, L/D = 8. At the times t = 2, 2.4, 2.8, 3.2 and 4.0, Pr takes the values 16, 22, 32, 64, and 128. Then, at t = 4.4, Raf is changed to 2.5×105 and after about one time unit a spontaneous growing oscillation becomes large enough to see.
Figure 5. Vertical sections with contours of |ψ| (black, solid), T (red, heavy) and S (black, dashed) during an oscillation with seawater properties. Ra = 105, Raf = 3.5×105, Pr = 10, L/D=8 (colour online).
Corrected Table 1 is:
Table 1. Numerical results. Type indicates the equation of state; B is for Boussinesq and S for Saltwater.
This has been corrected in the online version.
