Abstract
New proboscidean fossils from the Middle Miocene outcrops of Chabbar Syedan in Pakistan are described. The specimens comprise dentary, tusk and symphysial fragments, together with isolated teeth representing four genera and five species: Prodeinotherium pentapotamiae; Deinotherium sp.; Protanancus chinjiensis; Gomphotherium cf. browni; and Gomphotherium sp. A dentary of P. chinjiensis and lower tusk fragment from an adult individual of G. browni are novel reports from the Siwalik Group. Part of a lower tusk with well-developed grooves and a dp2 of Gomphotherium sp. indicate that the Chinji Formation has another gomphotherid species with intermediate-sized tusk and unique dental morphology. The palaeobiogeographical and palaeoenvironmental implications of proboscideans within the context of the Siwalik Group are discussed.
