“Our Voices: Being Seen and Heard”

A key strategy in decolonising social work policy, practice, education, community work, research and writing is the facilitation of spaces that centre Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander/First Nation voices. The aim of this Special Issue is to advance the decolonising agenda for social work. The Guest Editors of this Special Issue seek to bring together a collection of papers that uphold Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander/First Nation voices, leadership, and healing. Papers will discuss existing and emerging Indigenous knowledges, challenge ineffective, paternalistic policies and approaches, forge new ground in decolonised practice, and advance key themes and challenges arising from the recently published proposed guidelines (Bennett, 2021)—available at https://doi.org/10.1080/0312407X.2021.2013511

Topics may include and are not be restricted to:

  • Western writing frameworks (and why they don't work)

  • Critiquing/analysing journal Editorial policies/guidelines/protocols pertaining to Indigenous peoples/issues. Essential protocols in social work research and writing

  • Centralising and acknowledging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander/First Nations worldviews in social work practice/research/writing

  • Indigenous intellectual property and cultural rights

  • First Nations Sovereignty

  • The benefits of research and to whom

  • Decolonising knowledge production

  • Indigenous-centred research

  • The interface of Western and Indigenous pedagogies

Other topics aligned with the above identified areas may include:

  • Ensuring cultural safety

  • Positionality/intersectionality and First Nations people

  • Ally/accomplice work

  • Forging new ground in social work fields and forms of practice

Submissions are invited from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander/First Nation authors together with their colleagues, communities, organisations, and partners that discuss and address the identified topics.
