Notes

1. Forgive the long quotation but it is difficult to think of a shorter clear way of explaining this.

2. In many ways the strong presence of trans that has emerged over recent years reminds of me Ken Plummer’s (Citation1992) comment that, ‘A century ago, homosexuality was the love that dared not speak its name; now it has become a regular Tower of Babel’.

3. I choose to use Stuart Hall’s term, ‘articulation’ rather than the currently more commonly deployed concept of ‘intersectionality’. This is because I think that the notion of intersectionality implies a static power relationship between different groups of people, while ‘articulation’ (as in an articulated lorry) suggests movement. Relationships shift and change according to historical and geopolitical forces Hall (Citation1980).

4. A summary of Pence’s positions and actions on abortion and related rights can be found here (accessed 13 November 2016).
