Abstract

Hard jiga resin was extracted from the natural gum of jiga plant. Thin polymer films of the bio-blends of jiga resin and potato starch (ratios 1:1 and 1:2) were prepared in aqueous medium by casting. Tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (Eb) and moisture content of the films (resin/starch ratio was 1:1) were found to be 4.3 MPa, 17.2% and 21.3%, respectively. A number of solutions using vinyltrimethoxy silane (3–15% by weight) in methanol along with photo initiator were prepared. The films were soaked in the solution, cured under UV radiation and found biodegradable films of higher tensile strength.
