Abstract

Polypropylene (PP)/poly (lactic acid)(PLA) semibiocomposites were prepared by melt blending of PP with PLA and styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene-g-maleic anhydride (SEBS-g-MAH) copolymer at the ratio of 60/15/25, and were further modified with intumescent flame retardants (IFR) containing two kinds of phosphorus and nitrogen compounds to meet the fire protection requirements. The mechanical properties and morphology were characterized with mechanical testing and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The flame retardancy and thermal degradation were investigated with limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 vertical burning, cone calorimetry and thermogravometric analysis (TGA). The result indicated that the ammonium polyphosphate/dipentaerythritol compound exhibits better flame retardancy on PP/PLA semibiocomposites.
