Bovine Serum Albumin Immobilized-Polyvinyl Alcohol Membranes: A Study Based on Sorption, Dye Release and Protein Adsorption

Abstract

Bovine serum albumin (BSA) immobilized polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) asymmetric membranes were prepared under glutaraldehyde concentration gradient. Morphology of the prepared membranes was analyzed by using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The surface morphological studies revealed that the PVA-BSA samples resemble asymmetric membrane structure. The cross-link density of the membranes was found to influence the water sorption and dye release. In situ protein adsorption studies were performed in order to check the possibilities of this sample for biomedical applications. The results indicate that protein adsorption decreases with increase in BSA content in the membrane.
