Abstract

Silane precursor microencapsulated intumescent flame retardant (MCIFR) was prepared by sol-gel process and then modified with Phenyltriethoxysilane. The effects of microencapsulation technology on the morphology, surface and thermostability properties of IFR were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy, Water Contact Angle measurements and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). The effects of MCIFR on the flame retardancy and thermostability of Polypropylene composites were also studied by LOI, UL-94 test, Cone calorimeter, TGA and Dynamical Mechanical Thermal Analysis. These results indicated MCIFR was prepared successfully and its water-resistance and thermostability were improved. Furthermore, microencapsulated Polypropylene composite had higher flame retardancy and thermostability.
