Abstract
Three-layer core-shell structural nanoparticles, poly styrene/polybutadiene/poly (methyl methacrylate) (PSBM) were synthesized via emulsion graft polymerization method. The toughening efficiency of PSBM was compared with MBS(methyl methacrylate-butadiene-styrene copolymer) for PVC matrix. It was found that the large differences in impact strength between PSBM and MBS arised from the structure characteristics and cavitation ability of rubber. The higher tensile modulus of PVC toughened with PSBM was directly related to the presence of hard PS glassy domains in the core, which acted as stiffening agents. It was also found that the multi-interface layer of modifier particles was a disadvantage for obtaining transparency of blends.
