Abstract

A new hydrogel composite, sodium alginate graft poly (acrylic acid-co-2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid)/attapulgite, was prepared and characterized. Adsorption of heavy metal ions onto the composite was studied. Maximum adsorption capacities for Pb2+, Cd2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+ were 1016.77, 79.38, 406.71 and 294.86 mg/g, respectively. It revealed that chelation played a prominent part in the adsorption of Pb2+, while ion-exchange was dominant for the other three metal ions. The adsorption of Pb2+, Cd2+ and Cu2+ was consistent with Langmuir model, and that of Zn2+ was in accordance with both Langmuir and Freundlich models. The composite showed great renewable performances.
