Title: Serials Access Then, Now and How: Moving From FirstSearch to WorldCat Discovery

Presenters: John McCullough is Product Manager for Discovery Services, OCLC, Dublin, OH

Leslie O’Brien is Director, Collections and Technical Services, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA

Sean Varner is Assistant Director of Systems, Howard University, Washington, D.C.

Abstract: The transition from aggregated online reference services to the world of webscale discovery services has resulted in many challenges for librarians, publishers and library service providers. These challenges range from fixing broken links to maintaining metadata for electronic as well as print serials and managing ever-changing knowledge bases. OCLC has participated in these changes from the release of OCLC FirstSearch in 1991 to the new WorldCat Discovery Services, available since March 2014. WorldCat Discovery takes serials access to a whole new level by providing a centrally-indexed, vendor neutral webscale discovery service for library users and staff.

This program features experiences of academic librarians who have successfully updated their access to serials and electronic resources as they moved from FirstSearch to cloud-based discovery through WorldCat Discovery. You will hear about developments on the horizon for electronic resources librarians–based on new data modeling in WorldCat using the principles of schema.org, and Linked Data, RDA and FRBR entities and Works.

At this session, you will also learn more about the process a discovery provider goes through to normalize publisher data of all sorts–including serials–before it is added to a central index. You’ll get a view into how discovery services typically think about results ranking, and better understand the technologies and metadata that support discovery results sets.

This program provides an opportunity for you to learn about the next wave of developments that affect access to e-resources and hear from librarians who are shaping the future in the way they manage automated knowledge base updating, integrate Demand-Driven Acquisition (DDA) programs, and use APIs to provide discipline-specific access to faculty and staff.

Title: Navigating Copyright as We Build the Digital Future

Presenter: Lisa Macklin is Director, Scholarly Communications Office, Emory University, Atlanta, GA.

Abstract: Librarians encounter copyright questions on a regular basis, whether it’s in relation to digitization of collections, course reserves, clauses referring to copyright terms in license agreements, or questions from patrons. Navigating through these questions can be a challenge, but is not impossible. This workshop will focus on three main areas of the application of copyright law by librarians: fair use, libraries and archives exception in US Copyright Law, and the intersection of copyright and contracts. The workshop will include small groups working through scenarios often encountered by librarians.
