INVESTIGATION OF THE ROTOR OVERVOLTAGE IN SYNCHRONOUS MACHINES WITH RECTIFIER EXCITATION

Pages 21-38 | Accepted 01 May 1978, Published online: 07 May 2007

ABSTRACT

During disturbances of synchronous machines with rectifier excitation, when the field current becomes negative, it cannot flow because of the rectifiers and then the field circuit behaves as open. This can lead to an overvoltage at the rotor terminals. In order to protect the complete excitation system (diodes, thyristors etc.), the highest possible field voltage must be known, so that special protection measures, e.g., discharge resistors, can be designed appropriately. Therefore, the following two questions are of great significance:

1. When and during which disturbance the highest rotor overvoltage can occur?

2. How can this voltage be calculated?

An attempt will be made in this paper to answer these two questions.
