Abstract

The study investigated consultation prior to balloting as an alternative to the currently used system of judging academic debates. Although consultation did not significantly alter actual decisions, it did affect both the judges' bases for decisions and their confidence in them. Consultation also yielded more detailed written commentary regarding the debaters' performances; thus this method may have pedagogical value. Among collegiate debate judges there was strong support for the consultative method.
