American Indian speaking: An intercultural, interdisciplinary approach

Abstract

Understanding the rhetoric of Native Americans requires more specificity than does the study of the communication of some other minorities. Resources focussing primarily on the speaking of Black Hawk are used as an example of units that might be developed to show the wealth and variety of the speaking of Native Americans. The use of a modified form of this unit, as an interdisciplinary history‐speech venture, is described. Achieving the realization that rhetorical traits of long standing persist in current Indian speaking is a major aim of such study.
