Developing teachable small group communication behaviors

Abstract

Small group researchers should emphasize an investigation of message variables in a fashion designed to yield teachable behavioral objectives. As a rationale for this approach, the authors suggest that a focus on message variables facilitates the scientific analysis of communication and provides a direction currently lacking in small group research and instruction. A focus on message variables also allows for specification of behavioral objectives enabling a more precise assessment of student‐instructor accountability. The article concludes with examples of research‐based behavioral objectives for classes in small group communication.
