Redefining literacy: Speaking and listening as basics

Redefining literacy and basics

Some “basics” to get back to: A transactional perspective on teaching‐learning

Pages 277-285 | Published online: 18 May 2009

Abstract

This article argues that mutual trust and understanding between teacher and learner are essential to a “beneficial” educational experience. It also argues that “students” cannot learn, that what they learn depends on their interpretation of the “experience,” that attempts to control learning result in undesirable side‐effects, and that congruity of external and internal evaluations is a significant consideration infrequently considered.
