Recent developments in human affairs and in our model of rationality have created a necessity for a rhetorical theory that is sensitive to demands for synthesis of and harmony among divergent systems of thought and, second, an opportunity for scholars in speech communication to restore the significance of rhetorical theory and practice. The significance of rhetoric for today may be realized if it is reconceptualized as an architectonic and a productive art. Such a reconceptualization will require a restructured graduate curriculum to ready students to function in academic and nonacademic society.
