Predicting immediate belief change and adherence to argument claims

Pages 219-228 | Published online: 02 Jun 2009

Abstract

This paper operationalizes the probative potential of evidence in argument, and evaluates the importance of evidence in predicting belief change in a pretest‐immediate posttest setting. In addition, adherence to argument claims is predicted with equations drawn from the work of McGuire and Wyer. Results confirm the traditionally recognized importance of evidence to persuasion and suggest some modification in the Wyer model.
