Personal ethnography

Pages 158-170 | Published online: 02 Jun 2009

Abstract

This essay is a three‐part narrative about ethnography. The first part describes an incident that was instrumental in bringing about my personal interest in ethnographic research. The second part tries to convey a partial sense of what it is like to experience the doing of ethnography. And the third part of this essay discusses autoethnography as a response to some of the late twentieth century dilemmas of ethnographic inquiry. The overall purpose of this narrative is to offer a personal depiction of ethnographic experience and to contribute to the on‐going discussion of human communication study.
