Abstract
River lowlands and fens are fertile but sensitive agricultural sites. Soil protection requires knowledge on soil process dynamics.
Peat soils and lowland clay soils are susceptible against impacts by medium‐ and long‐term land drainage. Peat soils are threatened by extinction. Lowland clay soils change their structure properties distinctively. Soil developing processes are due to changes in the water regime. Good agricultural practice and management of the soil water regime are crucial means of soil protection. Flood protection is a basic precondition of land use and soil protection in river lowlands.
