Zur Zeit existiert kein direkter Maßstab der Saprobität. Der Saprobienindex „S” Von Pantle & Buck (1955) kann als ein indirekter linearer Maßstab dienen. Aus chemischen und bakteriologischen Analysenergebnissen wurden einige indirekte und nicht-lineare Maßstäbe abgeleitet, die besonders für eine graphische Darstellung geeignet sind. Als bester von ihnen erwies sich jener, der vom BSB5 durch Interpolation der Werte abgeleitet wurde (Abb. 3).
