A Note on Atmospheric Circulation and Surface Temperature Fields over South Africa

Abstract

In published classifications of synoptic circulations over South Africa no attempt has been made to show how surface temperature fields change spatially in relation to changes in air circulation patterns. In this paper variations in atmospheric circulation and changes in the spatial patterns of surface temperature fields have been examined using a classification of weather patterns derived from circulation types. Patterns of advection have been determined and a relationship established between airflow and surface temperature fields.
