ABANDONED INDUSTRIAL SPACES IN POST-APARTHEID SOUTH AFRICA: THE IMPLICATIONS FOR WOMEN IN MOGWASE

Pages 167-172 | Published online: 01 Feb 2012

ABSTRACT

One important aspect of the changing industrial geography of South Africa is the appearance of ‘abandoned industrial spaces’. In this paper the focus is upon the de-industrializing spaces of North West province which were formerly advantaged under the apartheid decentralization programme and have been left out of the Spatial Development Initiatives programme. Sixty interviews were undertaken with women factory workers at the Mogwase industrial area. The impact of retrenchment and women's responses to de-industrialization are investigated.
