An Assessment of SPSS Grid Interfaced SPV System under Abnormal Grid Conditions

ABSTRACT

This paper deals with a single-phase single-stage grid interfaced solar photo-voltaic (SPV) array system. A simple phase lock loop-less (PLL-less) control algorithm is proposed which works under wide variation in the grid voltage. Moreover, the assessment of all the intermediate control signals are described which helps in intuitive understanding of the SPV system. A suitable feed-forward term is included in the control algorithm to take care of fast sudden changes in the grid voltage or SPV insolation level. The proposed system is simulated in MATLAB and simulation results are verified experimentally. The operation of proposed solar energy conversion system (SECS) is demonstrated under abnormal grid conditions. The proposed SECS avoid generation loss in the deep voltage sag and swell at the grid. Both simulation and experimental results are shown for complete range of voltage variations. The grid current and voltage total harmonic distortion are observed well under IEEE-519 standard.

Bhim Singh

Bhim Singh received the bachelor of engineering (electrical) degree from the University of Roorkee, Roorkee, India in 1977, and his MTech (power apparatus and systems) and PhD degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), New Delhi, India, in 1979 and 1983, respectively. In 1983, he joined department of electrical engineering, University of Roorkee, as a lecturer. He became a reader there in 1988. In December 1990, he joined the department of electrical engineering, IIT Delhi, New Delhi, India, as an assistant professor, where he became an associate professor in 1994 and a professor in 1997.

He has guided 45 PhD dissertations, 139 ME/MTech theses, and 60 BE/BTech projects. He has been granted one US patent and filed 12 Indian patents. He has executed more than 60 sponsored and consultancy projects. His fields of interest include power electronics, electrical machines, electric drives, power quality, flexible AC transmission systems, high voltage direct current transmission systems, and renewable energy generation.

Professor Singh is a fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, the National Science Academy, the Indian National Science Academy, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Institute of Engineering and Technology, the Institution of Engineers (India), the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers, and the World Academy of Sciences. He is also a life member of the Indian Society for Technical Education, the System Society of India, and the National Institution of Quality and Reliability.

He received the Khosla Research Prize of the University of Roorkee in the year 1991. He was the recipient of J. C. Bose and Bimal K. Bose Awards of the Institution of Telecommunication Engineers for his contributions in the field of power electronics in the year 2000. He was also a recipient of the Maharashtra State National Award of the Indian Society of Technical Education in recognition of his outstanding research work in the area of power quality in the year 2006. He received the PES Delhi Chapter Outstanding Engineer Award for the year 2006. He was the general chair of the IEEE International Conference on Power Electronics, Drives and Energy Systems (PEDES’ 2006), and (PEDES’ 2010) held in New Delhi.

Chinmay Jain received the BE in electrical engineering from Shri G. S. Institute of Technology and Science, Indore, India in 2009, and the ME in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India in 2011. He is currently working toward his PhD degree at the department of electrical engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, India.

His research interests includes power electronics, power quality, grid interfaced SPV systems, and design of custom power devices.
