The current issue of the IETE Journal of Research (Vol.63, No.2, March-April 2017) contains 14 articles. These articles present on-going research and developments taking place in the broad areas of Electromagnetics, Signal Processing, Microelectronics, Computer Science and general Electrical Engineering.

The paper on ‘A compact broadside coupled notched band UWB filter with wide upper stopband’, presents an ultra-wideband band pass filter with notched band and wide upper stop band characteristics. The use of such a filter in indoor environment can be useful due to the notched band that can remove the high-power interference sources. The passband is between 2.85 and 11.3 GHz. The filter structure is developed with split ring resonator metal lines of half guided waveguide length, and stub lines. The paper presents the design and measurements of the fabricated filter.

In the paper ‘A new Kalman filter based 2-D AR model parameter estimation method’, a method for two-dimensional autoregressive model parameter estimation using Kalman filter is given. The use of Kalman filter enables recursive estimation of the model parameters in an adaptive framework. The algorithm extends the method for the 1-D case to the 2-D case. The efficacy of the algorithm is demonstrated through numerical examples.

The following paper on ‘A novel approach for human action recognition from silhouette images’, presents a technique for recognizing human action from human silhouette by using the spatio-temporal movement of body parts as features for their classification. The action classes include walking, running, jumping, jogging, kicking/punching etc. The approach is scale invariant and independent of the view direction except for top view. The performance of the technique is studied on publically available datasets in terms of accuracy of detection and compared with other algorithms.

In the paper ‘Chaotic image encryption with hash keying as key generator’, gives an algorithm for image encryption. It uses multiple chaotic maps including logistic-tent and tent-sine maps for diffusion process, and different maps for permutation and diffusion to encrypt images. The encryption is studied for key space analysis, key sensitivity analysis, histogram analysis, quantity analysis, correlation analysis and differential attack analysis.

The following paper on ‘Circularly polarized multi segment circular fractal array antenna by modified feed network for C-band application’, presents the design of a circularly polarized array antenna with fractal structure. It operates in the 3.99 to 7.89 GHz band. An important feature is the focusing of the feed network in centre section of the array. The paper compares the simulation and measured results from the fabricated antenna.

The paper ‘Design and measurement of planar monopole antennas for multi-band wireless Design and Means’ gives the design of a compact multiband and reconfigurable planar monopole antenna. The reconfiguration is done using an optical switch and the antennas can operate in single and dual band modes. A wide range of applications are suggested for the proposed antenna. The performance of the antenna is presented using simulation studies and measurement from a fabricated antenna.

The next paper titled ‘Effective doping of monolayer phosphorene by surface adsorption of atoms for electronic and spintronic applications’, presents the study of the effect of surface adsorption of several different adatoms on the electronic and magnetic properties of monolayer black phosphorous using density functional theory. Conclusions are drawn about the mobilities and magnetic moment for spintronic applications.

The paper on ‘Efficient voltage control in proton exchange membrane fuel cell: An approach based on intelligent algorithms’, gives a method for the accurate and efficient control of fuel cells. The design procedure for their voltage control process in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembly is discussed, along with its numerical study. The control process is based on the bacterial foraging algorithm for intelligent optimization. The performance of the controller in various loading scenarios is presented through numerical case studies.

In the paper ‘Implementation of fuzzy model for maintaining scheduling of vehicles based on Monte Carlo simulation and geographical information system’, a fuzzy modeling approach is given for maintenance scheduling of vehicles based on several parameters. A case is shown to bring out the efficiency of the fuzzy approach and illustrate the incorporation of underlying uncertainties in the decision process.

The next paper titled ‘Improved performance of cascaded fractional order SMC over cascaded SMC for position control of a ball and plate system’, presents the comparative analysis of the sliding mode controller (SMC) and fractional order sliding mode controller (FOSMC)in the problem of trajectory control of a benchmark ball and plate system. The paper describes a cascaded SMC and FOSMC to track the trajectory and handle uncertainties in the system. The algorithms are simulated and experimental validation in a laboratory setup is presented.

In the paper on ‘Investigation of a right angle isosceles triangular patch antenna on composite and suspended substrate based on CAD oriented cavity model’, a cavity model and single resonant parallel RLC circuit is given to estimate the characteristics of a right angle isosceles triangular patch antenna on a composite and suspended substrate. The triangular patch antenna is typically smaller than a rectangular patch antenna without affecting the radiation characteristics. The accuracy of the model is compared with experimental and simulation studies.

The following paper titled ‘Multilevel hierarchical caching for efficient wireless video distribution’, a video dissemination architecture with multilevel hierarchical caching is investigated. It considers the caching of videos in smart phone and disseminating by device-to-device communication. This facilitates the placement of data close to the user and thereby reducing delay time in accessing the video from a remote server. The performance of the proposal is studied in simulations and compared with other standard caching techniques.

The paper on ‘Variability analysis of stochastic parameters on the electrical performance of on-chip current-mode interconnect system’, presents the study of stochastic parameter variability on the electrical performance of on-chip current-mode interconnect systems. Current-mode signaling scheme is relevant for high speed communication in on-chip interconnects. The variability effects of transistor and interconnects is analyzed. The effect of variability analysis is studied for single, coupled 2-line, 3-line, and 5-line interconnect structures. The effect of individual process parameter variability is also studied using statistical analysis techniques.

The paper on ‘Voltage stability index for distribution network connected in loop configuration’, presents the voltage stability analysis of loop distribution networks in terms of voltage stability index. This augments the classical voltage stability analysis of transmission and radial distribution networks. Two cases are studied analytically and benchmark analysis is done on IEEE 69 bus test distribution networks. The analysis is applied for distributed generation placement and fault identification.
