Radiation Characteristics of an Isosceles 45°–45°–90° Triangular Microstrip Antenna

ABSTRACT

In this paper, radiation characteristics of an isosceles 45°–45°–90° triangular microstrip antenna (TMA) are presented using simple extension of cavity model considering field variation in all dimensions for the first time along with physical explanation. Eigenfunctions, eigenvalues, input impedance, far-field radiation patterns, etc. are discussed. Approximate expression is given here to predict the resonant frequency with accuracy better than 1%. Theoretical results are verified with experimental data to show the accuracy of our theory. The study of 45°–45°–90° TMA is important because (1) the area occupied by the antenna is just half of that compared to a square patch antenna for a given resonant frequency, (2) mode suppression (including fundamental mode) of the antenna is quite easy compared to other conventional shaped patch antennas, (3) all modes of the antenna are dual polarized, and (4) four modes out of first five modes of the antenna produce a peak in the broadside direction.

Sudipta Maity was born in Kolkata, India in 1985 and obtained his METelE degree from Jadavpur University, India in 2010. He worked at Cognizant Technology Solution (CTS), Kolkata, India for 10 months. He joined Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Jadavpur University, India as a research scholar in 2011. After submitting his PhD dissertation in May 2016 from Jadavpur University, India, he is working as Assistant Professor at Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Institute of Engineering and Management, Kolkata, India. He has published 11 international journals and 15 research articles in international conferences. He has received six paper competition awards. His areas of interest include microstrip antennas, dielectric resonator antennas, spectral domain method of moment, integral transformation, analytical techniques, and computational electromagnetic.

Bhaskar Gupta

Bhaskar Gupta (S’83–A’89–M’90–S–’99) was born in Kolkata, India, in 1960. He received the BETelE, METelE, and PhD degrees from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India, in 1982, 1984, and 1996, respectively. He is currently a professor in the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering, Jadavpur University, where he has been teaching since 1985. He has published about 312 research articles in refereed journals and conferences and co-authored three books on advanced research topics. His present areas of interest are planar antennas, dielectric resonator antennas, wearable antennas, photonic band gap materials, computational electromagnetic, MEMS design, and application of soft computing techniques in microwave engineering. Dr Gupta is a fellow of IETE, a fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India), and a life member of SEMCE(I). He was the Chairman of AP-MTT Joint Chapter, IEEE Calcutta Section and Chairman, Students’ Activities, IEEE Calcutta Section. He has supervised 15 doctoral theses and is presently guiding 16 more. He served as reviewer in different internationally acclaimed journals. Further, he successfully completed 17 research projects sponsored by various agencies and is currently working on 3 more, including national and international collaborative projects.
