UWB Dual-Band Notched Conical Dielectric Resonator Antenna with Improved Gain

ABSTRACT

A dual-band notched ultra wideband (UWB) conical dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) is proposed. A circular patch with cross slot on the substrate and slotted partial ground plane is realized to achieve wide impedance bandwidth. Further, the inverted conical dielectric resonator is placed on the cross slot to achieve high gain as well as more wide impedance bandwidth from 1.7 GHz to 13.5 GHz. The entire band is useful with two filtered bands at 3.3 GHz and 5.5 GHz by the creation of notches. The Wi-MAX band (3.3–3.75 GHz) is filtered with spiral defected microstrip structure on the microstrip feed and the wireless local area network (WLAN) band (5.2–5.6 GHz) is filtered with etching rectangular split ring resonator on the circular patch. The far-field gain with the circular patch is considerably increased by the conical DRA loading, which is around 6 dBi except at the notched bands and the simulated radiated efficiency was varying from 75% to 93%. The proposed antenna size is 60 × 60 × 10 mm3. The antenna is simulated and optimized for the dimensions on the FEM-based ANSYS HFSS platform. The simulated results agree well with the measurement result.
